WHAT IS CBT?
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It is a goal-oriented and evidence-based approach to treating a wide range of mental health conditions and psychological challenges. CBT operates on the principle that our thoughts influence our feelings and actions, and by identifying and changing unhelpful or distorted thinking patterns, we can create positive changes in our behaviour and emotional well-being.

In CBT, individuals work collaboratively with a therapist to identify and challenge negative or irrational beliefs, also known as cognitive distortions. These distorted thoughts often contribute to emotional distress and unhealthy behaviours. By examining the evidence for and against these thoughts, individuals can gain insight into their thinking patterns and replace them with more accurate and constructive beliefs.
CBT is a structured therapy that typically involves a set number of weekly sessions, usually ranging from 6 to 20, although the exact number can vary depending on the individual's needs. The therapy is time-limited, meaning it focuses on achieving specific goals within a defined period. Sessions are typically held on a weekly basis and involve active participation from the individual.

During CBT sessions, therapists and clients work together to develop strategies and skills to manage and overcome challenges. These strategies may include behavioural experiments, where individuals test their beliefs through real-life experiences, as well as cognitive restructuring, which involves challenging and reframing negative thoughts. Clients are often encouraged to practice new skills and techniques outside of therapy sessions to reinforce learning and foster lasting change.

CBT has been extensively researched and has demonstrated effectiveness in treating various mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and substance abuse, among others. It is a versatile approach that can be adapted to different populations, age groups, and cultural backgrounds. CBT can be delivered in individual therapy, group therapy, or even self-help formats, making it widely accessible to individuals seeking support and personal growth.
